4th Time's the Charm: Duran Duran AND Filter 10/16-10/17

I had my rocking weekend with my two favorite bands back to back! First Duran Duran and then Filter! It was my fourth time seeing each of them in concert. I saw Duran Duran in 1999, 2001, 2005 and now 2011. I've seen Filter in 2008 and now three times in 2011. And in about two weeks I'll be seeing Filter for a week on Shiprocked! I did also see John Taylor solo in 1998...But I digress.

My man John Taylor: Favorite Bass Player in the World!
I became a Duranie at the age of 11, and considering I'm now 29, I think you can consider me a Duranie for life. Duran Duran STILL puts on one of the best live performances I've ever witnessed. They are true pros. After years of playing together, they seem even more tight, perhaps even flawless as a band.

I had a blast dancing and cheering with the huge crowd along to all the fun hits. And I had my typical heartfelt moments with some of my favorite songs that have comforted me since I was 11.

John Taylor is still hot at the age of 51, and his bass playing is perfection. They were all sharply dressed and had a spectacular light show and video screens to enhance their catchy music with visual stimulation. I'll always have a soft spot for Duran Duran.

My pics and vids of Duran Duran are rough quality, but I'm still sharing them.

My favorite song EVER.

I was most excited to hear this one live for the first time. It was off their very first album.

This is my fave song off the latest album.

Also my first time hearing this one live!

You can hear me squealing like a school girl when they introduce JT haha.

Nice audience sing along intro...

Neon Trees opened for Duran Duran. They were very entertaining, especially the singer.

Now unfortunately, Filter added a headlining show the same night as my Duran Duran concert. So I saw them the next night when they opened for Bush and Chevelle.

Me and RP take 3!

Filter really should have been the headlining band for this show. I know I seem biased, but they rocked the hardest, out of the three bands. The show felt in reverse dynamically. It started out on a high note and then tapered off with Chevelle and Bush. They are still good bands too, but the stage presence was just not as strong.

I got special attention again...haha. Some people probably hate me now, but oh well. For the first 2 or 3 songs of Filter's set I got trapped in the middle of the crowd. The show was sold out and there were a lot of Bush and Chevelle fans taking up space from the loyal Filter fans. But my friend rescued me and got me toward the front.

There were about 3 layers of people in front of me, and Richard Patrick came down in front of the crowd as usual. He saw me and put out his hand and pulled me to the front to kind of lean on me for a moment. Some of the girls around us were looking at me funny after that. Then a little more into their set, he came down in the center area and I got a hug. And after he crowd surfed, he gave me his Filter wristband. I also scrounged up one of the guitar pics he threw in the audience.

Richard came out to sign autographs again, so I got one on my Filter shirt I was wearing. Then I forgot to show him my tattoo, so I went around again. I wanted a picture of him with my tattoo, and he got all silly haha.

At 2:00 you can see Richard handing me his wristband. This is a video some random person got.

At 2:00 I hugged Richard, but the person moved their camera.

At 1:09 you can see him just stick out his hand to pull me up front. But the camera moves. You can see me about 3 people back and then I'm not there.

DC101 had this voting contest for the greatest bass line in modern rock. 15 songs were nominated by listeners and one of them was "Hey Man, Nice Shot." I found out about it and rallied up a few Filter fans to help with the voting. They played it on the radio while we were in my car driving to the concert. Filter made #1!

Tour Tidbits: Filter and Duran Duran and a little bitta randomness

First off, it's rather amusing to me that my two favorite bands, who I'll be seeing in two weeks, seem to be traveling on similar tour paths right now. Not only are they coming to my area at the same time, but they have both already done some gigs in Cali as well as Vegas. I wonder if they'll run into each other at any point...

FILTER

Exciting news in the world of Filter...They surpassed their goal of reaching 90,000 fans on Facebook. I also noticed they gained about 400 MORE fans since they began touring with Bush and Chevelle. I'm happy to see that because I was hoping this tour would bring them more exposure that they deserve!

Richard Patrick celebrated his 9th year of sobriety on 9/28. He brought his daughter onstage that night (video below) and then got a tattoo for his son! I'm very happy and proud of him!

Rich with his daughter Sloan

Richie's tattoo for his son: "Ridley, It is not flesh and blood but heart which makes us father and son."

Videos yo!

Sweetest thing in the world! Richard Patrick brings his daughter onstage during Take A Picture. Also it was his 9-year sobriety date.

Entertaining interview, as always...

Rich and Jonny headed to the radio station, with pimpin sunglasses.

This remix of Take A Picture is cool. The first time I heard it was maybe a few years ago when I watched that movie "Valentine" for the first time. This played at the end. And you can buy the mp3 on amazon!

I never watched CSI regularly, but I did catch this episode and I remember the background music catching my ear...It's You Walk Away.

Chevelle caught the speakers on fire the second night of the tour.

Anew Revolution Interview: They opened for Filter in NC when I saw them.

I wish I could go to this show too! There are VIP packages available.

MEWZAK FRENZY! Tattoo, Filter, R.E.M., Duran Duran, and MORE!

First off, a quick update on my concert countdowns!
21 days till I see Duran Duran!
22 days till I see Filter!
50 days till ShipRocked!

Now as for the rest of this blog, I feel as though there's a bit of mewzak ADHD going on or something haha. So just try and keep up...

My Filter Tattoo!
Much to my surprise, Filter posted my tattoo on officialfilter.com :)
1st stage
Here's what my tattoo is about. I have a cross in the middle of my back above this and the combination of the two tattoos represents for me, that it CAN coexist. "There's a philosophical debate going on that's been going on for a couple thousand years, about whether or not religion and science can coexist...Is she (the angel) treading on Galileo's scientific notation or is she drowning in it? You don't know."

Oh and a shameless plug for my awesome tattoo artist: Drew Baker at Golden Monkey Tattoo. He's done 4 out of my 5 tattoos, and as long as I'm getting tattoos and he's doing them, I'll be his loyal customer. Go see him!

Filter posted this update this week:
"Our brother, Rob Patterson, will be taking some personal time, and will not be joining us on this upcoming tour. We wish him the best, and hope he accomplishes his goals. Fear not, FILTER friends...We'd like to introduce you to Jonny Radtke. Jonny comes to us by way of ASHES dIVIDE, and Kill Hannah. His guitar playing, style, and personality have made for a seamless fit alongside Richard, Mika, and Phil. Please join us in welcoming Jonny Radtke to the Fold!"

Rob will be missed on this next tour and we should all send him our well wishes! Hope to see you rocking again soon!

Some new promo photos:

(I really like this one...)

I made my own little CD...I call it the RP Deluxe. I bought the whole European CD of TTWA to get "Leaving Without A Note," the whole Underworld soundtrack to get "Awakening," and the whole Family Values Tour CD for "Pride." All of those came from amazon.com. "Gimme All Your Lovin," "Happy Together" and "Fades" the 2012 soundtrack version, you can get individually from itunes. The other songs are of course from the Deluxe "Trouble with Angels" album.

I LOVE THIS hahahahahahaha

A rare one live..."I Will Lead You"

A snippet of "Gimme All Your Lovin" with an introduction by Richard Patrick

Well this sounds good considering bogus sound equipment and power failures and drunk people throwing bottles at the band with no security and the promoter stealing their merchandise money.

The title of "Richard Patrick Freaks Out" is a little much. Seems to me he took things pretty calmly with all the problems at this gig.

R.E.M. Breaks Up after three decades

R.E.M. is one of those bands I remember growing up listening to...I'm glad I got the chance to see them in concert once. They have made some great music that I've loved over the years and I will miss them...I can't possibly post ALL of their songs that I like, so I'll just put up a few of my faves.

My ticket stub
I fondly remember R.E.M. and U2 as bands from my childhood that have followed me all along...Now R.E.M. is retiring. Here's one of my favorites, the two bands combined:

Givin All My Lovin to FILTER! Vote for Mindless Faith! Awolnation blows my mind! ShipRocked Battle of the Bands

Finally, the recorded version of Filter's ZZ Top cover song, "Gimme All Your Lovin," is unveiled! Give your ears some lovin right now and give it a listen in the music player at the end of this song review!
FILTER, ‘GIMME ALL YOUR LOVIN” – SONG REVIEW

The ZZ Top Tribute Album comes out October 11th and includes cover songs by FILTER, Steven Tyler, Mick Fleetwood, Jonny Lang, John McVie, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, Nickelback, Wolfmother, Duff McKagan's Loaded, Coheed & Cambria, Mastodon, Wyclef Jean, Daughtry, and Jamey Johnson.
Pre-order the CD here: ZZ Top A Tribute from Friends on amazon.com

I have to say Filter has always been amazing at doing cover songs, from "One is the Loneliest Number" for The X-Files movie soundtrack, to a very dark version of "Happy Together" for The Stepfather soundtrack. This ZZ Top cover comes off just as creative! And I also think Richard Patrick's lower voice in the verse is super sexay. ;)

More in Filter news...a Texas promoter French Smith seems to have ripped off the band at BatFest. So I say karma time!
Metal Sludge

I also found out Filter is playing a headlining show at Recher Theatre in Maryland on October 16, the night before I'm seeing them open for Bush and Chevelle at Fillmore. I unfortunately cannot make it to this newly announced show because I'm already seeing Duran Duran that night. But I'm still seeing my two fave bands two nights in a row, so I can't complain TOO much.

Got my Ticket!
Now, check out this Jane's Addiction remix by Mindless Faith and vote for them in the contest! Mindless Faith is an awesome band from DC/Baltimore. ;) They're some great, talented guys. Help 'em out!

And here's a recent remix they did of one of their own originals.

I just got the "Megalithic Symphony" CD by AWOLNATION. You might be familiar with their song on the radio, "Sail." No two songs on this album sound alike. I am an instant fan. I'm always impressed by eclectic music and they do NOT disappoint me.

Especially check out this song, "Knights of Shame." It's a 15-minute track that changes so many times it blew my mind. This live performance is even more amazing. Watch for the lead singer/guitarist swap with the drummer toward the end.

Also, check out and vote in the ShipRocked Battle of the Bands! One of these bands will get a chance to perform on the ShipRocked cruise in November! And let me throw in a little plug for Cage9 because a friend of mine knows them. ;)

My Birthday: FILTERIZED/Fall Tour with Bush/Chevelle!

Me and Richard Patrick Take Two!
Gosh, where to start? I had a wonderful birthday and WEEK! And a rather large part of what made it great was FILTER! I got to make kind of a last minute trip to NC for the show at Ziggy's and got quite a few surprises. Richard Patrick said my name, which you can see in the video after this. Then he jumped off the stage right in front of me, hugged me and sang right in my face! One of the best adrenaline rushes ever! Plus, before the show we met and got pics with Phil Buckman and Mika Fineo. Then after the show we of course went to see Richard at the merchandise table, and even found Rob Patterson later in the parking lot. A link to my concert pictures is also below. To top it off, Richard told me Happy Birthday on Facebook for the second year in a row! So needless to say, my birthday was Filterized, and it was awesome.

Richard saying my name at the show! (Someone else randomly recorded this and I found it on youtube).

The concert itself was amazing! This was my third Filter concert and this was the most energetic show I've seen from them yet! It was a wonderfully intense performance and I even lost half my voice from "WOO"ing so much. I didn't stay for Saliva, but one of the opening bands was very good: Anew Revolution. I met the drummer briefly before the show and he was the one who subbed for Mika in Filter for a few shows when he had an eye injury.

Now for another big announcement: Filter will be joining Bush and Chevelle for a Fall Tour! I will be catching them in MD in October! Oh and I will actually be seeing them the night after I see Duran Duran for my fourth time. My two favorite bands two nights in a row! Wow, and I just realized it will be my fourth Duran Duran show AND my fourth Filter show! I'm also looking forward to Bush and Chevelle because I've never seen either of those bands live.

I got my Duran Duran tickets in the mail ON my birthday too!
My friend got me this awesome copy of my second favorite Duran Duran album for my bday, which also came out the year I was born.
